Temple Dedication Weekend

This blog has to start with a recap on the events of Saturday, October 2nd, 2004. I was sitting in the basement of my sister's house listening to conference (and grading papers) when President Gordon B. Hinckley announced that a temple would be built in Twin Falls. I had only lived in my cute little cow town(just down the road from Twin) for 3 months, but I think I was was almost as excited as the magic valley natives. Of course, it takes along time and a lot of work to get from the announcement of a temple to the actual having of a temple but this weekend, all of the waiting and working paid off.

My temple weekend began with the Youth Cultural Celebration...a huge music and dance spectacular that the youth from all 14 stakes in the valley have been working on their numbers every mutual night since Christmas.
Our branch ended up with a handfull of tickets, so Saturday afternoon a bunch of us piled into my car and headed up to the fair grounds. Melissa drew the short straw and had to sit up front with me for the first leg of the trip. Amber and Elizabeth hung out in the back.

We stopped by the temple to pick up Lacie, who promptly took over the duties of co-pilot.
Here we are on the highway about a mile or so from the fair grounds in a TRAFFIC JAM. I had to take a photo since TRAFFIC JAMS aren't common occurrences in this part of the world. I thought my taking-photos-while-driving talent would impress my passengers, but it turned out they were more frightened than impressed. That meant Lacie chose to add blog photographer to her list of co-pilot duties. It was either that, or use her skills as a highly trained nurse to patch us all up after my attempts to drive and take photos at the same time eventually ended in tragedy...as we all assumed they would. When we finally got to the fair grounds, we found other members of our branch waiting for us. Melissa's seat was right by Brother and Sister Hobson on the second row. Yes, I said the second row. Those were pretty darn good seats, but not quite as good as...

...the front row seats Amber and I got. Yep, FRONT ROW. I think we may have been closer to the action than the visiting general authorities. Of course, good seats like that always come with a price. I am assuming Amber and I are going to find ourselves scheduled to speak in Sacrament meetings about once a month for the next two years.

Oh, and speaking of visiting general authorities...from left to right...Elder Costa of the Presidency of the 70 and his wife, Sister Neilson and Elder Neilson (our area authority, who is right behind the podium), then President Eyring and his lovely wife, Elder Cook of the 12 and his just-as-lovely wife, a random photographer, the PRESIDENT THOMAS S. MONSON, shielding his eyes from the sun and looking out at the hundreds of assembled area youth. It was an impressive sight.
The theme of the cultural celebration was "Living Waters" and the opening ceremony used blue flags, blue bandannas, and blue dancers to make you feel like you were watching the Snake River dance right there in the middle of the rodeo arena.
The organizers, the youth leaders, and the kids put in an awful lot of work to make this night amazing and they really exceeded everyone's expectations.

The performances were inspired by different aspects of the history of the Magic Valley. My favorite was the Paul Stake's hip hop inspired dance that they performed to a rap about potatoes. The dancing potato in the background was a real show-stealer.

We hated for the show to end...partly because it was so good but mostly because it meant trying to fight our way out of the field where everyone had parked before we could even start the process of driving home. But I managed to remain cheerful despite the cow pasture gridlock. The only time I cussed was when I was quoting what my dad would say if he had been there.
We took a lot of back farm roads on the way home which was fun...except for the 25 or so near death experiences that resulted from unmarked death curves, suicidal raccoons, and a driver who can't see in the dark. In my defense, I did mention that last part to my passengers before we left the nicely lit freeway and none of them tried to leave the car. of course, the doors were locked and I didn't slow down...but if they were really that worried that wouldn't have stopped them, right?
But we did manage to get home safely, just in time for me to fall into bed so I could get up for the dedication this morning. Here are Zealanda and I flashing our white tickets.

There was already a line when we got to the temple, but we only had to wait in it for a little while before our white tickets were noticed and we were whisked past the line, into the temple, and up to the Celestial Room.

The dedicatory session was such an amazing experience. Both President and Sister Gerrat spoke, followed by Elder Costa, Elder Cook, and President Monson. Zealanda and I were in the second row...less than ten feet away from the prophet the entire time! Elder Eyring gave the dedicatory prayer, and I got to use a handkerchief that belonged to my Grandmother (a magic valley native) for the shout at the end.

Afterwords, we met up with some of the leaders from our branch. Finding them on the temple grounds felt wonderful...like what I imagine meeting long lost friends will be like on the other side of the veil. Talk about a joyful reunion! Meeting up with the Barkers, Hobsons, and Woodhouses really helped put the whole experience into a proper context for me. I loved being in the Celestial Room and being there with the Prophet was a once in a lifetime spiritual feast, but something wasn't quite right. I spent quite a bit of time wishing my family and the rest of my wonderful branch could have been there with me.

Which means the real gift I received today was a renewed and strengthened testimony of Doctrine and Covenants 18:10-16. The fullness of joy does come from returning to Heavenly Father's presence as part of a group of people you love. Who would have thought that the old saying"the more the merrier" is an eternal truth?

I've Got the Golden Ticket!

Sorry Michael Phelps.

You were my favorite person for, like, 14 hours this weekend and it was fun while it lasted.

Unfortunately for you, my stake president manged to come from behind to win the gold in the "Making Mindy Happy" competition.

What was that, Michael? You want to know how he pulled off the surprise win?

Well, he gave me my ticket to next Sunday's temple dedication.

My ticket inside the temple for the temple dedication.

My ticket inside the Celestial Room inside the temple for the temple dedication.

I'm just a little bit excited.

But don't be sad, Michael. We'll always have Beijing.

Flamingos is good eatin', ain't they?

Somebody gave me the bird!
Twice!

I woke up Wednesday morning and went to go pack up my car for my impromptu trip back to my parental homeland and found THIS on my front steps. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not opposed to having things left on my steps. Shortly after I moved here, a kindly plant-fairy used my steps as a drop off point for several leafy things that I some how managed to not kill....at least not immediately. So plants I am used to but, although my cute little cow-town is full of wildlife, flamingos aren't exactly indigenous to Southern Idaho so you can understand my confusion.
Turns out, this wasn't your average, everyday, run of the mill paper flamingo. This was Flo the traveling flamingo. She apparently had used the worlds worst travel agent, ended up on my front steps, and was now relying on me to get her to her next destination. Unfortunately for Flo, I had already made travel plans for myself, so she got to hang out in my kitchen while I visited the big city and pondered whose lawn she should visit next.
Imagine my surprise when I pulled up in front of my home Friday evening to find yet another flamingo waiting for me. I believe my exact thought was, "What the flock is going on here?" (I'm pretty sure it was thoughts like that, which I vocalized in the middle of Relief Society, in several Sacrament Meetings, and one truly memorable Stake Conference that got me released from my RS President position).

Apparently, I am running some sort of flamingo hostel, which I'm pretty sure violates about three clauses on my lease. Therefore, to help me achieve my goal of not being homeless before I'm 30, the flamingos will be relocated to the yards of which ever of my friends and branch members a) live in town so I can find my way to their houses and back b)don't have vicious guard dogs (or guard heifers as the case may be) and c) are good candidates for passing Flo and Flo Jr. along so that the traveling flamingo legacy can live on. In other, non-paper-poultry-related news... My branch had the opportunity to usher at the Twin Falls Temple open house this morning...very, very early this morning. I had the good fortune to direct tour-traffic in the hallway between the bride's room and the celestial room, so I got to see a lot of amazed faces. Speaking of amazed faces, here I am with Jessica, one of the girls who risked her life to ride to the temple as a passenger in my car. (This is us at a restaurant after the open house, NOT at in the temple...in case you were, you know, concerned about the decor in the back ground). This is Jessica's backside. I wanted to take a picture of her at a branch activity a while back and this was the only part of her that she agreed to have photographed. Should you happen to see Jess at the branch tomorrow, be sure to compliment her on the photo.
Oh, and don't think I'm mean to post it. She actually wanted me to print it out and hang it up at the branch building(Which inspired me to invent a fun game for a branch activity wherein you have to identify branch members by photos of their backsides. It is fun branch activity ideas like this [and my branch "shotgun wedding cake social" idea) that will eventually get me released from my calling on the branch activities committee). Here are Alison and Kendra, the other brave souls who rode with us.
Spending the morning at the temple was a wonderful way to start out my weekend. It put me in such a good mood that I didn't even consider useing my already dirty car to run down the handful of anti-Mormon protesters who had set up shop on on the corner. Well....I didn't seriously consider it. And if I had seriously considered it, it would have been for the charitable purpose of being able to do their work for the dead (if they weren't already dead, the irony of that situation would have killed them, eh?) ...Too bad I didn't have those flamingos with me. I sure would have loved to give those guys the bird.

Temple Blessings

I have been excited about the Twin Falls Temple ever since they announced its construction way back in 2005. I didn't take these pictures, but I have paid close attention as the temple site went from this... ...to this....
...to this....
...and finally to this. Now were are a month away from the start of the open house just when I thought things couldn't get any more exciting, THEY DID! Two weeks ago, I got to sign up to help with ushering, booties-placing, and cleaning duties. I was so excited to get to participate in the open house, I didn't think life could get much better. Then tonight I got a call from the stake Relief Society Presidency and was asked to be an open house hostess as well. All of the FHE lessons our branch has had on saving money must have sunk in because in an attempt to save on gas money I signed up to be a hostess at 7 a.m. on the same day that I usher in the afternoon and clean the temple at night. It will be a long day, but really, can you think of a better place to be for a whole day? Plus, by being a first shift hostess, I get to attend the start of the day prayer meeting with Elder Nelson, our Area 70 and a counselor in the temple presidency. The REALLY REALLY EXCITING invitation came on Sunday when my stake president invited me and my friend Zealanda to be....
...in the temple with President Monson during one of the dedicatory sessions. How amazing will that be? I get to be in the same room as the prophet as he dedicates my temple. Well, not MY temple, but you know what I mean. Talk about temple blessings, eh?

The Coolest Temple Ever!

The Twin Falls Temple is almost done! That means no more 2 - 2 1/2 hour drives for our branch temple trips! It also means another great opportunity to attend a temple open house. I just found out that you can start reserving tickets on Monday, June 9th by going to this website. Our little branch gets to drive over and help with ushering, cleaning, and (the best open house job ever) helping people put on booties throughout July and August. The Twin Falls Temple is cool and unique for many reasons, but my favorite is the steeple. The steeple actually changes color ... like a mood ring. Here it is reflecting the white clouds...
...and here it is reflecting the twilight blue sky...
...and here it is at night. Pretty cool, eh? I'd like to see any of those bigger fancy big temples do that (yeah, I'm looking at you, Rexburg) Our temple ROCKS!
